AmbiVirile Defined:
Ambi: a prefix occurring in loanwords from Latin, meaning “both” and “around” (ambient); used in the formation of compound words:
Virile: of, pertaining to, characteristic of, or befitting a man; masculine; manly: masculine energy
The term it self is a challenge on the traditional word ideas of ancient Virile men and/or some of the traditionally acclaimed masculine traits. While masculinity has somewhat been redefined in today's age to dismantle the toxic traits that many men exuded and meshed true masculinity with their own egotistical predatory dispositions.
As redefined by us, AmbiVirile equates to Ambi- representing "both" in it's Latin definition, and Virile representing the true masculine traits of a man...strength, courage, independence, leadership, and assertiveness versus the controversial views of "machismo". Combining these words aims to say that the definition of a man's masculinity is both defined in "true" virility and some of the powerful attributes society suggest are feminine...i.e. supportive, gentle, emotional, nurturing, caring. It resolves to say that men don't lose their masculinity when they release the suppressed energy society has told them to be ashamed of and be themselves.
An AmbiVirile man is a man who can balance the requirements of himself to his family and society and be the man that is needed at that moment,
Now, less philosophical and on to our application of this to our menswear. Our design strategy is to design patterns and prints that both speak to the classic conservative man, the bold eccentric man, or both. Making a statement that a man's sense of style doesn't define his masculinity. They both are virile...with a freedom of self expression.
